Open source communities give you many powerful content management system (CMS) for your image / photo galleries. This is the best open source web image galleries based on my experiences.
My favorite feature from 4images is RSS-Feeds (latest images of the gallery, latest images of a category, latest comments of an image). It will always connect you with your web readers. 4images supports many files (jpg, gif, png, aif, au, avi, mid, mov, mp3, mpg, swf, wav, ra, rm, zip, pdf) and also extendable for every file format (3gp, psd, smil, etc.). You can upload through browser, through admin panel or via FTP. There are automatic thumbnail generation and automatic resizing of images. 4images gives you spam control to help you fight spam comments. multiuser supported and you can give upload function for registered user. There are many templates available to download and templates can be edited using a general HTML editor or via the administration area. And you will get database backup function to help you backup your image galleries database.
My favorite feature from Coppermine is integration of user management with various bbs (like phpBB, YaBB SE, SMF, Invisionboard, vbulletin). You can make your forum website more beautiful using Coppermine. You can arrange your pictures in categories and albums. Full multimedia supported and users can upload pictures with web interface of ftp (and admin can batch-add to database). You can also make a slideshow viewer for your pictures. Don’t forget to choose a beautiful templates for your Coppermine. Unfortunately, no RSS publishing provided for this time.

My favorite feature from Gallery is Gallery can be embedded in several different content management systems, like Nuke 5.0+, NSN-nuke, Post-nuke, Geek Log, phpBB2, Mambo. Gallery also lets you mirror your albums on as many remote servers as you like. You can limit the quality and size of images so that when images are uploaded, Gallery will resize them to save space. You can add a watermark of your choice to your photo. And of course, RSS can be used to publish your Gallery and updates to it.
